Laptop Recommendations for AutoCAD (with possible future BIM/Revit use)

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for guidance on selecting a laptop that will be well-suited for my current and future workflow in Autodesk products.

I currently work in a construction and façade-related role, primarily producing shop drawings and layouts for ACM (Aluminum Composite Material) panel systems. At the moment, my day-to-day work is focused on basic AutoCAD use (2D drafting, shop drawings, and detailing). However, my company has expressed interest in expanding into more BIM-based workflows, which may include AutoCAD Architecture and potentially Revit in the near future.

Because of this, I’d like to invest in a system that handles AutoCAD smoothly now but is also capable of scaling into more demanding applications without needing to upgrade again right away.

I’d appreciate recommendations or insights on:

  • CPU (Intel vs AMD, clock speed vs core count for AutoCAD vs Revit)
  • GPU requirements (especially since my current work is mostly 2D, but may expand into 3D/BIM)
  • RAM (what’s realistic for longevity—16GB vs 32GB?)
  • Storage considerations (NVMe, SSD size recommendations)
  • Any specific laptop models or brands you’ve had good experience with in a similar field

For context, my work involves:

  • Shop drawings and fabrication layouts
  • Plan interpretation (architectural + structural)
  • Coordination with field and project management teams

I’m trying to balance performance, reliability, and long-term usability as my role evolves.

Revit requirements are higher than AutoCAD. Here's a deep dive into that:

Regardless, maximize on Ram and SSD capactiy.

Also it'll be important to purchase a graphics card that's been certified:

A very good guide. I would add it´s good to check how long the processor can boost. Especially in laptops this can be an issue, so make sure the cooling solution is the best you can get for that. Also a cooling pad for home use might be woth a look.

 

As an example, my workstations and computers at home and at work are cooled to make sure the boost can be maintained and isn´t just temporary. Therefore they never clock down, even under load. Thats a few hundred Mhz on the cores and a noticeable difference. My 12900Kf maintains it´s overclock and boost due to tuning well enough to hold the second best Intel result on 3D Mark and that with a off the shelf aio water cooling solution. The 3D Mark database offers good metrics for any possible core load scenario, which will benefit any modeling task that isn´t fully multi threaded as well as CPU rendering. Choosing a CPU that allows core count specific boost groups is necessary, as 4 cores can ask much higher clockspeeds than a full 24 for example.

I just wanted to share my laptop at work configuration XD. It´s a bit older but it´s quite good.

AMD Ryzen 9 7845 HX

32 GB DDR 5 @ 4.800 Mhz

4080 mobile with 12 GB of memory

SK Hynix PC801 1 Tb M2 PCIE 4.0 -SSD

 

The 12 GB GPU enables a lot if you´re using large models, in this case mostly for VR
