Using V ray material with displacement give these thorny render.

If use material like"Ground (with stones)_by_MaoUndo7968" downladed from Vray-materials.de which has displacment map,it gives these thorny like effect,this also happens with other materials to like grass material that come swith displacement map.

lower your displacement amount

So is there a way to find out how much value is required or do you have to find out by trail and error.

This may be a scale issue too, maybe the original creator was using mm and you are using Inches or Meters.

Displacement is using 3dMax default using so depending on that number is the relation of the effect.
