Revit to 3d studio 2017

Using building suite premium 2017.

So I want to do a lighting analysis in 3d Studio. I do the suite workflow method to bring my project into 3d studio. Problem is, the project comes in twice a big as it should be. This will definitely throw the lighting analysis off.

What gives?

Tried to scale the linked geometry in 3d stusio but couldn't find a way to type a 0.5 scale factor. The only option seems to be dragging to scale and that's not going to be accurate.

Also tried a link to revit from inside 3d studio but had all kinds of problems with lighting. The geometry did come in at the right scale though.

Thanks,

Rudy Beuc

Ok, worked on this some more...

It is actually 3 times the size and figured out that right clicking on the scal transform button brings up the type in inputs.

Ok, been fighting with this all day. It can't be me.

Changed the settings in the suite workflow menu and no effect. Revit objects won't combine by material, one object, or anything else.

When will this be fixed? interoperability between 3d studio and Revit is an integral part of my project workflow.

Please see the attached image from a project that's going to permit tomorrow. Was done in Suite 2016.

Can't go back, too many library objects already updated.

Thanks,

Rudy Beuc

Hello,

This is Jon A. Bell, with Autodesk Technical Support.

There are two possibilities for why this is happening. First, there was a Revit import Scale defect in 3ds Max 2016 which was addressed with Service Pack 3, but 3ds Max files linked before this service pack may need to be re-linked with the Revit geometry. (The defect was related to a centimeters > inches unit mismatch between the two programs.)

However, this may be a regression of the above defect which has re-appeared in 3ds Max 2017. If so, then I will be escalating this with our 3ds Max developers and product staff to get this looked at as soon as possible. As you noted, this workflow is extremely important, and I will do my utmost to see that it gets addressed.

As soon as I get additional information from our developers, I'll let you know.

Thank you for your patience, and I'll be in touch with you soon.

Best regards,

Thankyou, please let me know.

I concluded that something other than me had to be off when I notices that the same file would come into 3d studio at two different scales when using the suite workflow path in Revist as compared to imporing Revit File from within 3d Studio.

I canot use the "improt Revit" within 3d studio option because lighting does not improt correctly with that method.

Meanwhile, what's the scale factor I should be applying to my linked revit file? Around 40% seems to be the majic number.

Thanks,

Rudy Beuc

If it's the simple math between centimeters and inches:
1cm / 1inch
-> 1 / 2.45
= 0.3937008
-> 39.37008%

Hi Rudy,

I just wanted to confirm that our developers are aware of this defect for 3ds Max 2017, it's been logged, and has been escalated. I don't know exactly when a fix may be forthcoming, but it's definitely on everyone's radar here.

In the meantime, making sure your Revit > 3ds Max scene/units scales match can help you work around this issue, as others here have noted.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Right, Um I'm sorry, I guess I was looking for official confirmation of that all being the case.

From scaleing things in 3dstudio I had deduced that somewhere around 40% is what I needed to do. Why? i didn't really know. And your explaniation makes perfect sence.

Thanks,

Rudy Beuc
