Removing dark spots from the surface

I need to get rid of black spots which are on the surface of my models. I tried to use the material editor but It always removes the surface details which I need to keep. I am using 3ds max 2011. How can I solve this issue?

if you are applying a texture to your mesh, you need to apply a UVW mapping or Unwrap UVW to tell Max how to align your 2d texture to a 3D object.
Please review Max help on the texture mapping section.
