I noticed in your video that you applied a material while in sub-object mode. I do not recommend doing that, as you can inadvertently create Multi/Sub-Object materials. What may be happening is that your objects are sharing MSO materials and by applying a material in sub-object mode, that MSO is changing the order of the sub-materials and therefore affecting which material is being used on the various objects.
If you use the eyedropper to load the applied material back into the Material Editor, does it show a Multi/Sub-Object material in use? I'm guessing so. Reapply your materials without being in sub-object mode, and be sure you are only applying the single material and not an MSO material.
I do recommend using the Slate Material Editor as well. There is a menu called Scene Materials in there that allows you to "Filter Selected" and only show what is applied to your current selection. This is a quick and easy way to see if you've accidentally created an MSO.
