Linking Revit/FBX file into 3DS Max

Hello all.

I have been experimenting the best way to link a Revit file into 3DS max.

I tried 2 techniques, FBX link and Revit link.

I am finding some issues with linking a Revit file.

Can someone tell me why adding a door in Revit with the door swing reversed produces a black material compared to a door that has a default door swing. (See image)   I did not change the material on either door.  I used Arnold to create the rendering.

If you export a FBX file from the same Revit file and link it into 3DS max the issue does not appear. (See image) I used Arnold to create the rendering.

You can try this yourself by creating a Revit scene with 4 walls and adding a door and adding a door with the swing reversed.

Is this a bug?

Thanks

John

What materials are you using on your scene??

It looks to me that you have a normal problem, it is flipping the mesh and normals, instead only the mesh.

Place a normal modifier and do a test render. if the problem is solved then it is normals.

I never use Link directly to REVIT, our files are too big for that I always use FBX link or Export.

Thanks Francisco.

Yes that was the issue.

After applying a normal modifier it fix the problem.

But now the other door has the black color problem after applying the modifier.

Is there a work around to this problem or is the solution not to use the Revit link option and use FBX link only.

Thanks

John

Maybe I should be asking what is causing the material to disappear?

Is it due to the model having an open hole?

Is there a sub routine which can check the integrity of the model?

Thanks

Actually, the material does not disappear what is happening is 3D Max does not understand how REVIT mirror objects so what is doing is flipping the normals on the mirrored door, is like you flip a suck inside out.

I never work with REVIT direct link, I always export as FBX and link that I don't see that issue, maybe it is a bug.

What you could do is on the Normal modifier to click the box unify or use the sub selection mode and select only those polygons and flip them.

This would be a pain is all the doors in a large building have the same problem. Hopefully, some of Autodesk pop up, because as I mentioned I don't use the Direct link to REVIT, for many reasons, and this may be the other one 😉

Thanks Michael.

Using Edit poly solved the problem.

Both doors are now the same material.

Mucho gracias.
