Lighting and Rendering Problem

I am recently saw an animation called Jelly Jam, and i am wondering what kind of shader they used for making this type of art style.

Are they used ambient occlution?

And which render engine is the most suitable for this type of animation?

Thanks,

Han

I'm not sure what they have used in this project, but you can achieve these results with V-Ray.

actually any render engine could be used to create this effect.
I am sure is not as simple as AO tho, I see a nice falloff in the diffuse channel some glossies too, is a nice shader indeed.
For this type of animation it could be a pre baked shader on the model or render time.
