HDR normal map values

Can anyone tell me, or point me to a good referenec, showing what the linear (0-1) colour values are for a directx normal map? Having trouble working out from Photoshop alone, but I'm sure it must be pretty simple.
I know that the middle of this shape (assuming it's a convex dome) is 0.5, 0.5, 1
