3ds Max 4 project renders ugly on 2018

Okay, this is a long shot, but I'm rather stumped.

I have a project that rendered beautifully in 3dsmax 4 around the turn of the century. It's just a simple logo image, but when I load the file in 2018, the colors are completely washed out.

I've played with the materials and lighting a bit, but I'm having a hard time reproducing the original image.

Anyone happen to recall what has changed in the last 20 years in regards to materials and lighting behavior?

Or better yet, how do I change 3ds Max 2018/2021 to duplicate 3dsmax 4's rendering?

Thanks,

Brad

this is not a lot of information to go with.  however try using the menu:

   Rendering -> Environment

and in Exposure control click on the "Render Preview" button.  Try different exposure controls like "automatic" and adjust the brightness/contrast.  or in other exposure controls try altering the Exposure Value (EV).

Without seeing the render result it's difficult to say but it does sound like a gamma difference. Try disabling it.
