2 Materials, 1 Surface

So currently I am working on the floor of a house, and I wanted to have a hardwood floor staircase and a carpet in the middle. How could I go about having one material in the middle of another.

Another case where this would be applied is if I wanted to add a vent material on my floor. Currently am very comfortable with the old material editor if that helps. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Assign different material IDs to the polys and then use a MultiSub to assign the two materials to the surface
