rendering setup

I have just started using 3ds max and have had a tutor teach me on the 2015 version. I have downloaded the student version in 2017. I have been trying to render my model, however when ever I do this the screen either turns out black or pixalated. I have researched and watched videos to try and figure out what my rendering setup should be but I cannot find anything to answer my question. If anyone could let me know what I am doing wrong or how to setup my rendering preferences for a high quality render of single pieces of furniture or interior room settings that would be amazing.

Thank you

Hi @Anonymous,

Can you tell what Renderer you are using ?

In Max main menus : Rendering > Render Setup

In the "Common" tab > Assign Renderer

From your description I am guessing may be "ART Renderer" ?

If so, can you try using "Scanline"

There is a lot of information about Rendering here :

http://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2017/ENU/?guid=GUID-AD92977A-A377-4222-8827-0AE04C4D6A43

Let me know if that helps !

Hi @ads_royje

thank you so muchfor replying. I was on "art renderer" and changed it to scanline like you suggested, but I am still getting a black screen. I tried rendering on a new page but it still comes out fuzzy and pixalated.

I have read through the information on the link you provided but I still do not understand what I need to change to get the high quality renders. I have tried rendering another file and although this does not produce a black screen it is very pixalated. I have attached screen shots of this to show you.

Many Thanks,

Tilly

Hi again @Anonymous! 🙂

Thanks for sharing your screenshots!

I can see what is happening, at least for "Pixelization".

You can notice on the Title bar of the Render window, there is an *(4:1)* displayed at the end. This means that the image is zoomed in 4 times. You can use the mouse wheel to zoom out to *(1:1)*. That will solve the pixelization.

For the black render, I am not 100% sure, it may relate to not be in the rendering area.

To make sure, if it is in the rendering area, in the viewport, click on the [perspective] and set Show Safe Frame.

I show all this in Max in this video :

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/ff4729b4-c37a-4423-8048-22c9180c1c3e

I hope this can help,

let me know 🙂

Hi @ads_royje,

that seems to have done the trick, thank you so much you have saved me from a lot of heart ache!!!!

One more question ( apologies. 😊)

When on material editor in 2015, I could change the transparency and glossiness of the object easily. In the 2017 version they are not labelled the same and I cannot find what these options are now called to manipulate my materials.

If you could help on this I would be extremely grateful.( I have added a screenshot of the options I have.)

Thanks,

Tilly

Awesome! 🙂 it's great to read that your issue is resolved! 🙂

Hum, for the material, unless you used a different material (not "Standard") in 2015, the Standard material (that I see in the screenshot) is exactly the same as in 2015.

The Glossiness is still named Glossiness and transparency is Opacity :

Does that seem to match your expectation ?

Let me know! 🙂
