Reaction controller wierdness

Hi All, does anyone have any experience with using max script to create / edit float reaction controllers. I'm trying to sort some scripted rigging stuff out and they're kind of baffling me.

So far i've got the script to add the reaction controller and setup the driver which all works fine. Then i'm trying to create a few reactions and edit the values in them using .setFloatState or .setValueAsFloat which take an index argument to the reaction. Thing is this index seems to not really refer to the reactions i have consistently, it seems to jump around a lot and my reactions end up with the wrong values.

I've got a hack in at the moment which loops through all the states, checks the name and sets them based on that. But even then i have to run the loop twice to get the right values set.

I was a maya person until recently, so I'm sure it's just something i'm missing with how this stuff works. If anyone could shed some light on it i'd be really greateful.
