"Scripted Material Plugin" not visible when Arnold is active

Using the "scripted material plugin" I have extended the Physical Material into a new material. When the scanline renderer is active, all is fine. I am able to create and use this new material by clicking on it in the slate material editor Materials list. But when I make Arnold active, my new material disappears from the materials list. It appears Arnold doesn't think its compatible - but it is compatible because I'm just extending from the Physical Material.
Any ideas on how to make Arnold recognize it as compatible?
I have found that I can still create new instances of my material via maxscript. Once I've done that I can open it in the material editor just fine, and it renders fine with Arnold.
