VS is becoming such a bloated pile of festering smelly c# orientated crap (a default install doesn't even include c++ anymore and it's expensive to boot) has anyone had joy building on another IDE?

you can use a free version of visual studio 2017 or any other visual studio version.
https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/free-developer-offers/
that's a better solution to face with a new IDE.
