Trouble getting symmetry on an object

I'm trying to create this tree trunk but it's not behaving as I would expect. When I pull out the highlighted edges to create the roots it creates two different polygons on either side circled in photos A/B. How can I get these polygons to be the same and why is this happening?

I am not sure why it looks that why when applying symmetry, however, if you collapse the symmetry and go to 'turn' in segment mode in editable poly, you can edit and change the orientation of that. it may also be called 'turn edges'

It wasn't create applying a symmetty modifier, sorry for the confusion. But
it should come out symmetrical if the lines are evenly spaced and I'm
extending the edges evenly on the y-axis shouldn't it? Would what your
suggesting still work?

Resolved the issue. Even though the object is symmetrical the triangulation was not. Went into edit triangulation and was able to change it.
