Spline Vertex Tangent Snap

Does anyone know how to turn off snapping of splines when trying to modify the shape using vertex tangent handles? It seems that fine movement is overridden by a snapping action.

Gentle curves will sometimes snap to a straight line.  To disable this, uncheck Optimize in the Options rollout of the base Spline object.
