Pro Optimizer simplification issue

I’ve been working on a project which involves producing a model of a dining chair in Reality Capture before exporting it to 3Ds Max for trimming, optimization etc, and then to Unity for VR. On my first attempt, I used the ProOptimizer modifier to reduce the number of triangles in the model from 2million to 20k, and the results were great.

The only (important) mistake I made in this attempt was that I hadn’t added measurements to my model in RC so it wasn’t the correct size (it was giant in VR), hence my second attempt…

I recreated the model in RC with new photographs and set the measurements to their real world values, then exported to Max. This time, ProOptimizer completely ruins the shape of the model and stops simplifying when it reaches 65k triangles, regardless of whether I select 5% or 1% for example.

Apart from the obvious fact it technically isn’t the same model, the only real change I made was to their size, otherwise the exact same process was repeated.

I am very new to 3Ds Max and can’t seem to figure out why it works so well for one model and not the other. Can anyone help me with this issue or offer an alternative solution for simplification? I have attached images of the models after simplification to show the difference between the two.

**Ensuring the size is correct from the beginning is essential.

if you look at your first image it's says FPS "261"

and it the second image the FPS is "221"

so the pro Optimizer has knocked your polygon count to about 70% give in the old version max Optimizer only use to knock the polygon count down to about 50%.

i am not sure what has happened to the second render the chair is all messed up

Thanks for the reply. Does FPS not refer to the frames per second that I'm getting in the app itself? I don't understand why FPS would affect anything?

The Optimize Modifier lets you reduce the number of faces and vertices in an object. This simplifies the geometry and speeds up rendering while maintaining an acceptable quality of the image. A Before/After readout gives you the exact feedback on the reduction as you make each change
