No continuity between panels

Hello everyone,

I'm modeling a car. As you know, the continuity of panels is very important for a model in order to get a good rendering out of it. When I had created a decent shape for my car with the help of turbosmooth, I thought it was time to "cut" the panel lines. But after I did, after the subdivision as you can see in the screenshots, the holes that represent the places where lights are placed, have no continuity (even though I used a smoothing group for the "ring" inside the hole) . What is the best solution to solve this problem? I wasn't able to find any...

Thank you!

Hello @Anonymous ,

You could try to use a different smoothing group for each side of the cut edges and make sure smoothing groups is checked in the turbosmooth.  (Maybe already is.)

The old school method of controlling turbosmooths with extra edge loops is thankfully gone now.  You could play around with opensubdiv and use creases and whatnot.  Pretty great stuff all around.   Another option might be to check out something like Turbosmooth Pro.

Last but not least you may have some luck with the chamfer modifer and some clever settings.  (Min/Max angles, etc.) If you put that under a turbosmooth with the right settings it *may* help to smooth out that problem provided that the underlying mesh doesn't have any issues with alignment.
