Issue with connecting 2 vertices

Hi folks

I have a beginner question (several similar questions around, but still I am unable to solve my issue).

This is my initial model (note the missing edge between the selected vertices):

before_connect.png

In editable poly mode, I selected the two vertices and hit 'connect'. The result is the following:

after_connect.png

The edge looks good, however the upper face turned black. Why is this happening? What can I do to fix this?

I also checked the normals and smoothing groups: They look good to me.

Thank you very much!

PS: The model is also attached

Normals are off. Put an Normals modifier on top to force a recalculation.

Amazing, thank you very much! I would have never been able to figure that out 🙂
