Creating a big 3D terrain. Drew the contours using lines (Creation Method > Initial Type > Smooth); then went to Geometry > Compound Objects and hit terrain button and the terrain magically appeared.
Problem is, the Layered Solid effect isn't working well. Rather than a rice-terrace effect, I get a chaotic mess!
Help! I want my rice-terrace.

Help anyone?? Ideas? Suggestions?
I'm new to Max. so still learning the basics.
Only other way I can think of is to turn those contour lines into flat planes and then extrude them individually. Can someone give me a rundown on how to do that? I.e. turn those lines/splines into planes and then extrude them individually to get the terrace effect.
Thanks!

Set Interpolation Steps to 0 in Lines/Splines - that's the shape Terrain will use.
To get more details and curves you need more vertices on splines.
Apply Normalize Spline modifier to all lines and set segment length, lower value - more vertices.
