Boolean out holes in walls

Hello
I have downloaded a 3ds max model of a window.
Now I want to place it in an AEC wall.
However I want to automatically make an opening in the wall.
How can I modify the window model so that when it is placed in the wall an opening is automatically created.

Thanks.

Mvg Jos

you cannot to know knowledge. if it's an AEC window you can just use the select and link tool

select the window and use the select and link tool by holding down and it will give you a dotted line and drag it over to the wall. the wall will hilight and you then put the window inplace.

the problem is if you converted your walls down to a poly then you lose that option you would need to use a box then go to compound object and then Boolean as you know

You could try inserting a window object (e.g., Sliding Window) into a real wall and then use the substitute modifier to replace it with your "window" after merging it into the file.

Before you do the merge edit your window so that the window lies on the xy plane and  move its pivot so that it is at the middle bottom of the window (similar to the location of the pivot for the Sliding Window).  You should also modify the units in your window drawing so that the display and system units are the same.

I should note that if you are using 3ds Max 2023 you should install the 2023.2.2 update.  It fixes the problem that walls are not displayed as you dynamically create them.  See this thread for more info.

@leeminardi Yes, i saw that thread. I also posted a comment there.

I already installed the latest update.

Ok, I get the window placed with substitute.
However, the opening in the wall does not adapt to the frame.
Or the frame does not adapt to the opening in the wall.

Unlike a 3ds Max window object that has Height, Width, Depth, and other parameters your "window" is just an editable mesh without any of these parameters.  A Max wall cannot make a proper hole without this information.  My suggestion to use the substitute modifier would require you to use Max windows with the dimensions of the window you would use for the substitution.
