Hi,
I'm having a slight issue in figuring out how to cut up our logo into the sphere. I was wondering if someone could guide me on how this can be done. As I've watch quite a lot of youtube videos but can't seem to get the answer anywhere. So I turned to the help of the community.
I'm self taught so I don't know a lot about the software. But hopefully slowly slowly I will get there.
I've attached a photo of what I'm trying to accomplish.
Thanks,
Seb
Hi,
Create a 2D Text and place it correctly, then select the Sphere, got to Create Panel, Geometry tab,
Then from the Drop-Down menu choose Compound Objects, click ShapeMerge,
Then click the Pick Shape Button and choose the Text object, and choose the option Cookie Cutter
From the Operation group
If you don't want the Text to Cut the Sphere, and you just want to Stamp the text onto the sphere in a way
That you'll be creating new Polygons onto the Sphere, then Choose the Option Merge instead of Cookie Cutter
After checking the Merge option you can add an Edit Poly, and when you go to the Polygon Sub-Object level,
The newly created Polygons will be selected.
Now you can Extrude them, Bevel, etc,...
Hi Miledrizk,
Thanks for the reply.
This method works however, it's not the text I want to use.
Is there not a method to use the BigPicture text which is shown in the screenshot? That is the actual logo which I want to cut out from the sphere.
Thanks,
Seb
Well, Two ways come to my head now:
1- Depends on the Mesh of the text geometry,
You can apply two Bend modifiers, using Bend axis of X,
First Bend is for bending horizontally. For the second bend, you need to rotate its Gizmo
90 degrees so that you can bend vertically.
Now bring the text close to the sphere geometry in a way that part of the Text object is inside it.
Now select the sphere, and from the Compound Objects, choose Boolean, click Add Operands,
And choose the Text object, then choose the option Subtract
If you saw some small artifact caused by some normals problem like in the picture below
You can fix it by adding an Edit Poly modifier, then from the Polygon drop-down menu, choose all polygons
And click the AutoSmooth button
But depends on both geometries, maybe you'll still have some small Normals issues.
2- Another way to do this is to create a spline shape from the contours of your Text object,
And then use the method described in my first reply.
In the Editable Poly, Edge sub-object level, select the contours and use the option Create Shape From
Selection in the Edit Edges rollout, choose the option Linear in the small dialog that opens, give it a name if
You like. Now you have a contour shape, try the ShapeMerge and see if this works.
Hi Miledrizk,
I've figured out how to do it with your suggestions (see attached screenshot).
The only problem I have now is the original logo has these lines white on it.
Would you know a method to get these lines sliced out from the sphere? Then making the text white only and the rest blue?
Thanks,
Seb
To detach the Text from the sphere you need to select the Text Polygons,
Check the option By Angle in the Selection rollout to make your selection faster,
Now, click the small button near the Detach button, and in the dialog that opens,
Make sure the 2 checkboxes are unchecked, give it a name and that's it.
Now you can apply a white material to it.
For the Square Pattern, you can create a texture in photoshop(or find one on the internet),
Make sure it's square, and apply it as a diffuse map.
The mapping should work immediately, but if you like to adjust it
You can apply a UVW Map modifier, use Spherical mapping method, and modify the size of the mapped texture
using the UVW Map Gizmo and the Scale tool
