Advices to "smart subdivide" closer to camera or equivalent meant to be used for displacement on terrain?

I cant find decent info on how to try this, unless I would surrender to use multiple shapes.... I only want a simple mesh/plane to be subdivided taking into account the distance of the camera, so It keeps most subdivisions focused on the first plane and not along the whole surface but I cant find how to achieve this.

 

Any workaround? The only modifier that could offer something "similar" would be an Edit poly+ tessellate on certain polys but leaves a lot to be desired.
