3dsMax 2017 - Per-Face smoothing problem. Editable Poly looks like Mesh

I think this problem is probably best explained with pictures. Its hard to explain this one.  But basically I like to do a lot of modeling using faceted faces in Editable Poly.  I have been using Max 2014 for a long time and it works great. But I recently have been trying to switch to 2017 and I noticed a change in how things work. It creates visual details that make it harder to model in some cases.  Max 2017 Editable Poly looks like Max 2014 Editable Mesh.

When you apply a smooth modifier to an object but don't specify Auto Smooth or do a threshold you can get rid of all smoothing on an object. This means that no matter what you do you see faceted shading on a per poly basis.  In max 2017 it shows it per-traingle though. So you see invisible edges.

How can I work how 2014 did?

Note:  Turning on Auto Smooth and then setting a low number like "1" is not the same thing and gives undesired effects.  When you are modeling and removing edges etc..  smoothing groups will start to merge together.  The desired method there are no smoothing groups at all on the model.

In a way its like "Editable Poly" now looks like "Editable Mesh"

Thanks.
