UVW Editor - Why force to select texture?

I've always wondered why are we forced to pick a texture to display in the UVW editor if the model already has one or more materials applied to it? It just adds an unnecessary step to edit UVs.. unless I'm doing something wrong?
I feel like once we open the UVW editor in poly sub-object mode with for example a polygon with map channel 1 selected, it should open the UVW editor with the texture that's been applied to channel 1 already.
Also, when using a custom game SDK, the texture list doesn't even show up in the list when it's a multi-material. So I have to select a bitmap and manually search for the PNG texture to display in the UVW editor. It's so maddening. Is there a quicker way to do this?
