Transform won't constrain to axis

When I try to tranform an object on an axis it just goes all over the place in free tranform mode. It seems to be locked so that non of the axis are highlightable r usable. It was working fine, not sure what I did.

Just to note, the gizmo is turned on in preferences and in the view menu the gizo is visible. I can still see the gizmo with all the axis, it just seems to be locked to transform on all axis at once.

I just discovered that it's something to do with snap being turn on. When it's off I can constrain again. What would cause this within the snap settings?

Found it. In snap settings there is an 'enable axis constraint'.

How did I turn that off if I didn't know it existed.

Sorry for wasting anyone's time reading my little monologue.

Glad you posted this.
I just updated to Max 2019 and suddenly couldn't constrain my gizmos! I hadn't changed anything, but like you, discovered (thanks to your little tip) that Options / "Enable Axis Constraints" was somehow turned off. It may be a super simple fix, but i could have wasted a lot of time had i not come here first.

Thanks!
