Tips for modeling to new users?

Hi, I am new 3ds Max user (started about a month ago) and new to 3d modeling in general. I'd like to know your thoughts on how to approach modeling any object regardless of their shapes and how you go about modeling things when you see them. Is there a standard way which everyone follows, or is 3ds Max more open to different techniques? For instance, when you model a car, is the approach you take the same as when you model a person? How can I learn to model anything I see or visualize? I understand this may be an open ended question, but I'm really trying to understand 3ds Max more than learn its specifics, which I learn quite easily.

I would start off with the 3ds max tutorials, then move onto the advanced, it all depends on what industry you want to get into, so i would not run before you can walk,

as for approaches ppl use different way of modeling things, no one models the sameway.

there are a lot of tutorials out there in video (some are free and some you will have to pay for) and written form,

3ds max tutorials written by autodesk http://docs.autodesk.com/3DSMAX/16/ENU/3ds-Max-Tutorials/

first i would think about what industry your looking to get into, sorry to repeat myself, weather that is 3D architectural design, character modeling car modeling Sfx animation etc,

Hello @Anonymous,

Some of the best tips can be found in the modeling tutorials that come with Max, but there are also some amazing tutorials in the Learning Channel (See Guided Learning category) which is @melissa.lax's domain.

In general, with cars and characters both it's best to start with very low poly basic shapes and then refine as you go forward.  Adding too much detail too soon can lead to unneeded extra work and makes it harder to make changes when you go for approval.  Youtube has a treasure trove of tutorials on both and there are some paid sites with great tutorials as well.

Best Regards,
