Subobject 'select by angle' selects things behind/in front/anwhere it feels like

I used the polygon sub object select 'by angle' all the time, but I think in 2018 this 'feature' came into play.

It doesn't select the polygon group you've clicked on. It also selects polygons that aren't part of the element, behind it. It can even have it's normals flipped, so if you happen to select these, and then delete them, and then later you rotate round and realise you have also deleted polys -behind- the polys - this is a pain in the ass.

Was this brought in, or is this a bug? I guess it's a bug.

BLUE is the ones I want to select

RED are the ones I don't want to select

Not 100% clear on how you're using the function, are you clicking on just one poly when selecting or doing a drag selection?

It should be restricting itself just the element of the polygon you clicked on but it can include in the selection any connected polys that are within the angle chosen, including ones that are behind. It also takes into account the normal of the poly so usually those won't be selected as they wouldn't fall within the 180' maximum value.

Also the image you're referring to isn't there, can you try re-attaching?

In addition to @BenBisares guidance re setting the angle properly, it sounds like you need to check "Ignore Backfacing" in the Edit Poly/Editable Poly rollout >Selection tab.

Familiar subject, isn't it?

It's something with newer versions of Max and Z-sorting.

But it's happening only on Editable Poly object level and editing geometry on main obj. level is mistake by it self.

"Ignore Backfacing" will not stop selecting separated elements and it is limiting some other selection options.

You are wrong about that.  The screencast below shows the difference while trying to select the inner surface with and without ignore backfacing checked.  In terms of limitations of "Ignore Backfacing" , you just uncheck it when you are done selecting what you want.     I think you have  a valid point about using an Edit Poly Modifier on top of the Editable Poly, but I am not sure this was clear to the original poster.

@Anonymous

You have 2 options to better get the selection you want.   Use Ignore Backfacing at the Editable Poly level as shown in screencast or place an Edit Poly modifier on top of the Editable Poly object.  The selection bug does not occur with the Edit Poly modifier.

I don't think  "original poster" @Anonymous  cares for any options...

In my previous post I left a link to original post - source for copy-paste in this thread.
