"Exploding" edit poly modifiers meshes

Heyo!

I've recently encountered a reoccurring problem that is kind of a bother to deal with, this being that when I model, seemingly out of nowhere, meshes/subobjects seem to "explode" on me. Completely messing up the topology of the subobject causing me to have to delete them or remove the current instance of edit poly that I am working from and start again. This can happen when I close/open the max file or even while I am working inside the same modifier, I have worked on one side, turned the model to work on the other side, and turned back 2 mins later only to find the walls I worked on completely borked. I haven't been able to find a lot on this, but from what I have found people mostly mention either the modifier stack being very large and trying to go down the stack to change something or I've seen some people mention it occurring when you change edges in the modifier.

Is this a widely known issue? Is there a known fix? Or is this something that should be added to a bug list.

Also just to have it added here: I am running Max 2017 (Version/service pack of max 2017 #(19000, 48, 0))

Thanks!
P.s. See image below for example.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I might be forced over to 2018 then. Gonna miss the 2017 layout so much tho.

Better move directly to 2019, there's few more fixes with the latest product updates that you would miss otherwise, for example the faster commandpanel redraw when switching editable poly subobject levels in PU3.

I even tried to be precautionary and make many save files along the way. They're all corrupted.
