I tried both Max 2023 and Max 2024 and can't reproduce the issue. While that doesen't mean it isn't one, it does on some level confirm that the functionality has not been changed in Max 2024.
There are a number of other factors that can possibly cause this I'd suspect. Have you tried resetting the piviot on each of the multiple objects to make sure they are aligned in the same way? Have you collapsed the stacks of all to see if something in the stack is preventing the expected behavior? Have you tried the Axis Snaps lock (see attachment) to see if that helps?
If you still can find a solution, you can try an ENU reset (save your current one so you can get back to it) to see if a fresh ENU works as expected. Then if so, something in your current configuration is causing the issue. An ENU reset might be your fix.
When I've had issues like this come up and not enough time to diagnose or fix so what I've done is select the multiple objects and then move the 'Working Pivot' to the spot I need to zoom into. Then set it to 'Use' it and zoom in. I'd make my changes, zoom out and release the Working Pivot and keep going.
Another way is to select an 'XForm' modifier and add it to the multiple object selection. Move that XForm to the zoom in spot, tweak and then delete or collapse the XForm.
Lastly, zoom in, use the spinners to move, and done. Not the same as dragging the mesh, but it works in a crunch when finishing the project is more important than spending half a day diagnosing.
