I have written a script which reverses a sub-division and would like to try this on your model but I can not open it because it has been saved as a newer version to me. Could you please go to SAVE AS and select an older version of 3dsMax such as 3dsMax 2014 or 2015 please and I will give it a try.

I replied twice but they don't seem to have appeared... STL files are CAD files which builds 3D models using NURBS, a completely different format to 3dsMax. When you Import these files into 3dsMax they are converted to a 3dsMax Mesh which is what's creating the triangulation. Long story short there is no easy way to do what you're asking other then to manually correct these issues. As mentioned in one of my previous "missing" posts I would recommend doing is running "Quadrify" on the model which basically attempts to convert Triangles to Quads. It usually does a poor job but it's better then nothing. Then (because the model is symmetrical) I would slice the model down the center and delete the worst side (side which requires the most work) and then you just need to fix 50% of the model and whatever the Quadrify couldn't fix.

I have done the steps mentioned in my previous post

1. Import STL File

2. Perform Quadrify

3. Slice model and deleted half of it

This should make things much quicker repairing this model - just apply the "Symmetry" modifier when finished to re-add the other side.
