Having trouble using Boolean/Proboolean.

Trying to make a Mario Question Block. I managed to use the boolean tool to insert small rounded cones in the corners of the block with some trouble (sometimes the order I selected the cones in would make the geometry go all wonky).

Now I'm trying to merge the ?'s with the block, but when I do the geometry goes all off. Any suggestions on how I can fix this in order to make it suitable for 3D printing? I've tried to Pro tool as well.

Posting another example of trouble I'm having with boolean that I ran into while trying to make something else in the meantime hahah.

Any steps I can take when I begin a model to ensure this doesn't happen?

That happens to me sometimes when I try to use the boolean tool or even converting shapes to editable poly, for me I have noticed that can just be the vertices reacting weirdly, and the smoothing groups not knowing how to react from that as well and cause the stretched dark bits. Just try connecting some vertices together to try to see if it fixes it, such as a vertex from the corner to the middle, just to add some extra supporting segments to help the software understand the object better.

Thanks for the tip! This worked with my Deku Shield. Wasn't as simple and did not work with the ? Block, but a simple smooth modifier worked after using the Boolean tool.
