GoZ opens new instance of Max

Hey everyone, I can't seem to figure this one out and I'm hoping someone has a solution. I've got 3ds Max 2018 and Zbrush 4R8 P1 and the GoZ function just isn't working like it used to in Max 2014. 

Max>Zbrush = fine, no problem
Zbrush>Max = model goes back to original Max scene, but also opens a new instance of 3ds max with nothing in the scene.

Totally agree that not everyone has the same workflow, of course.  Was just hi-lighting where the plugin is lacking in comparison; even in the description the author admits that it is better in some areas and worse in others.

 

I just meant the actual issue (GoZ between Max 2018 and ZBrush 4r8) is not yet solved, and I believe that was answered when someone posted that Max 2018 is not yet officially supported in the list from Pixologic here: http://pixologic.com/zbrush/features/GoZBrush/

 

And I meant that my post was not adding any more information 🙂 I appreciate everything everyone else was trying it helped me eliminate what would not work, and again agree that it will help for simpler workflows.

Here's an imperfect workaround to get GoZ to import from Zbrush to Max 2018.  Download the "GoZ for Vray" script from Par Amsen which can be found on this thread:

Close Max and tack up your existing Macro_GoZ.ms file then copy this new one over it.  When you hit GoZ in ZB it will still launch a new instance of Max but the model will import into the already open session of 2018.  You have to keep closing all the extra copies of Max that keep opening, but at least it allows you to transfer correctly.  

 

Pixologic really needs to update GoZ for Max in a bad way.  I've been using this version of the script for years to avoid it resetting the renderer back to Mental Ray, which fortunately came in handy to fix the current 2018 issue.  If you have any trouble downloading from the ZBC thread feel free to DM me and I will email it to you.

Nice trick. I will try it.

I don't think Pixologic will update it until his new Zbrush release (if we are lucky). They didn't care the last 12 months and don't think they care now. Also because some reason they pointed his commitment to support Maya but nothing about Max.

 

I was using it before. It was working fine but I stopped using it in 2017 because it was not needed any more for the Mental Ray problem.

Hi guys,

 

       A friend from my work solved this mental ray problem. He edited the Macro_GoZ file inside the startup scripts folder. If you are on a windows machine, this is probably the path:

 

          C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2018\scripts\Startup

 

       Then edit the Macro_GoZ file with the notepad and search for this line:

 

           global s_forceMentalRay = True 

 

       Then just erase True, type False and save the file.

       

       About opening another instance of 3ds Max, I don't know the solution... It's probably something that Pixologic should take a look at. This is happening also with Maya 2018.... at least on my pc. I hope they fix this soon.

mg, tested and sadly it is able to keep the connection only once. After the first going forwards and backwards with Max it  won't work

Testing with Zbrush 2018 that workaround it seems now can be consistently sending from Zbrush to Max if:

  • You don't mind a empty Max instance opened each single time
  • Some times just before you send back the model to Max you need to send from Max a different model. If you want to be sure do this each single time and GOZ always will work, but from my experience sometimes can GOZ 4 or 6 times without this.

The the result is a bit annoying but usable.

That's excellent news...

I haven't requested an update to the newest version of either program at work because of this since it affects multiple users... if anyone could share success I would greatly appreciate it.!
