Gizmo is only working on 2 Axis

I'm fairly new to the software but I have been following tutorials and none of them have this issue. Whatever axis I draw a flat shape on and turn it into an Editable Poly it wont extrude on the same axis e.g. I drew over a floor plan on the X Axis, I then tried to make it 3D by sliding the Z axis up on the gizmo but nothing! it extrudes on the X and Y fine. I tried it on other axis just to see but whatever axis I draw on it wont extrude on the same one. I can still make objects (cubes etc). When I look at the properties it tells me that the axis has been extended but I cant see no change in any of the views. I have been stuck on this for hours, uninstalled and re installed several times.

Hi,

Use the extrude modifier to extrude on the z axis. Here is more info.

the image attached shows you are in scale mode not in extrude mode. And if its just a flat surface, it will not give depth when you scale it.
