Coffered Ceiling build

Hello, I am using 3ds Max 2014, using splines and the Sweep modifier to make a coffered ceiling. I need the connections to be mitered and I can't figure out how to do that. Attaching an image of the ceiling moulding in process.

With the presumption you are using a 'Custom Section' with your sweep modifier, How about instead of linear splines that are crossing each, rather create the boxes with the rectangle spline object and adding the sweep modifier but with "half" of the profile.
