Chamfer Unexpected Behavior

I'm really new to modeling and this program seemed simple to get started.

I'm modeling a fridge.
I started by making a cube the size of the fridge without the doors.

I inset the front and then cut the interior polygon twice to make my freezer and fridge areas.
I extruded two of the 3 new polygons to make the interior.

I then converted my model over to an editable poly.

Now when I try to chamfer the top I get insane behavior like in the picture.
What am I doing wrong?

Perhaps if the area between the segment selected and the ones around it are too close together this could happen, try an even smaller decimal value (instead of .25 try .025) and play around and adjust all the settings in the popup chamfer tool to see how it reacts.
