Car model has strange uv map

Hi guys, so I'm pretty new with 3ds max. My reason for using it was to create templates for 3d car models, however my first attempt has not gone so well. Upon using the unwrap uvw modifier, the template shows an image completely different from the model, an octagon with a stray vertex point in the corner (which upon selecting selects the entire model). Any ideas?

It's not a "stray vertex" mate. It's your entire model. It's not really that problematic. If you have applied SMOOTHING GROUPS to your model, then just click on FLATTEN BY SMOOTHING GROUPS. (See attachment - 1). When done, you can custom unwrap it further by using the Peel, Projection etc...( See attachment -2)
