3ds Max axis constraints aren't working?

I am trying to move a vert along the Y & Z axis only. From what I understand this should be easily possible using the axis constraints in the toolbar. 

It doesn't seem to be working for me unless I'm doing something wrong since this is my first time using 3ds Max.

You need to enable Axis Constraints separately on the second tab of the Grid and Snap settings. It`s off by default.
