I would like to be able to update a linked RVT with a different filename. Yes, the chance of losing work is there if you update with the wrong file, but there are ways to mitigate that, like pop ups that scream the warning before proceeding.
This could further be mitigated if Revit generated some kind of tracking ID for each project that goes into the file "header" that is just there for other programs (Max) to sense if a file picked for updating will match the currently linked file. Ok, that may be a bit lofty, but you get the idea!
Maybe Max just reads the first 10 objects and if there are matching object names in the new file, it will allow the update as long as the user understands the risk of proceeding (pop up).
Our filenames contain codes for project tracking like version and initials of who worked on it, which is typical for large companies. When I get an update I have to rename the new file in order to update the link, which is the only way to keep the materials that I applied in Max.
