Unify shortcuts in different areas

Unify shortcuts in different areas

Unify shortcuts from the standard to edit/editable poly and mesh (who wants M for meshsmooth??).

Its really annoying how the shortcuts are not consistent between different areas, why edit poly have to have different shortcuts from editable poly? And some bizarre ones like the "M" that always opened the material editor in max, I still can't believe someone decided to assign this shortcut to a destructive meshsmooth in editable poly... and this is just one example.

Yes, why can't I assign all basic editable poly functions to key commands. You simply can't do this with bridge. Also please allow us to use full set of shortcuts in slate and UVW without override toggle. Having a window focus approach would be much better.

100% agreed!

Tool shortcuts and even modifiers keys (crtl / shift) and what they do in various windows are very inconsistent.
Override toggle is just plain inconvenient and wastes time while adding an extra step.
Having to remember and map out two different sets of shortcuts for both editable poly and edit poly is unbearable. I vote for window focus approach as well.

Hi @fla3d

I'm happy to say that we are actively pursuing this! Are you part of our beta program yet?

Hi everyone! Our design team has taken a first pass at this and have crafted a new .kbdx file that is ready for testing in 3ds Max 2017+

Who wants to give it a try? It is accessible from the following link:

Is there a shortcut key for the bridge function???

What about a window focus approach?

Currently it seems like an updated shortcut map, no more than that. Different parts of the app still use SHIFT/CTRL modifier keys differently, scaling and zoom functions in different editors still not unified.

Nothing new regarding window focus approach. The closest thing we have is Keyboard Shortcut Toggle Override which honestly is still a bit of a mystery to me and "Overrides Active" checkbox in customize window seems to have no effect

Yes, we definitly need a window focus aproach...the current system just dosent work.

Hope the Devs will seriously consider this. Usability is currently very low.

Hi everyone,

This particular topic is very close to me, and my team worked through numerous iterations with many of you in our feedback/beta community to get this right. I am very happy, and also very proud to announce a revised set of defaults for 3ds Max, available in 3ds Max 2020.1 Update. Aside from updated defaults, we've also developed a whole new hotkey customization experience, and I believe you'll enjoy it. Please visit manage.autodesk.com or the Autodesk Desktop App to check it out, or read our online documentation which has been completely updated to reflect these changes and explain the default settings:
