Switching between elements (vertex/edge/polygon) is slow

Switching between elements (vertex/edge/polygon) is slow

This has been a problem with Max for as long as I remember

If you switch between vertex/edge/poly/ etc etc in edit poly mode, the lists of buttons underneath disappears, then slowly scrolls out again. It takes approx 2 seconds, but I believe these five buttons are the most used part of 3D Studio Max - and the UI interface is sloppy.

Is there any way to get this sped up, or instantly - if not, can someone show me another application that does the same thing, $3 or $3000? It makes no sense to have it working this badly in 2019.

The commanpanel redraw within editable poly was specifically adressed within 2019.3 and further updated in 2020.

2019.3 didn't see improvements in sub object switching

2020 did introduce new rollout sorting method, which can be turned on via maxscript, however it hasn't been publicly shared outside of beta forums.

@Anonymous it sure did (and it was the one and sole reason for me to install it ASAP), see Fixed Issues in 3ds Max 2019.3 Update:

Improved UI redraw speed for EditablePoly Edit panel when switching component modes. MAXX-45728

In 2020, a way to change optimization modes was quietly exposed with the default one set to the improved one (mode one) though you can set it to the legacy mode 0. And yeah, there're other experimental modes and a good reason not to announce those and wait for 2020.1 to fix some issues they have like broken custom ordering.

I was one of the few people reporting this issue on beta forums and pushing for a fix 🙂
2019.3 didn't fix it for me and experimental modes 0,1 and 5 (which show an improvement but not a fix) are only available in 2020

I know, I've been reporting it the last few years and mentioning it on every possible occasion on beta, you will find my posts in all of the threads both on beta and autodesk slack. Mode 1, the default in 2020, is pretty much the same as the fix applied in 2019.3 - maybe there might be something else that comes into play for you but for me that was already a noticeable difference.

Eitherway, the point is this is being actively worked on and it's improving with each new release.

its awesome to see some improvements to this,  i was experiencing slowdowns and crashes before using 2018, but in 2020 it's vastly improved

As some have already mentioned, we delivered some gains on this topic for 2019.3 and 2020. We understand how crucial this is and we have more work in the pipeline. We even have some prototypes that are in a testable state, so come check out our beta program to learn more and to see for yourself!

Thanks for this!

Can anyone link me to the .3 update for 2019, I can never seem to find it? 🙂

The 'find updates' thing in Max's help section only brings up this sparse update page.

Hi @jibijib

The best place to get access to updates is through your account portal at manage.autodesk.com or through the Autodesk Desktop App.

Once you log in, you should be finding 3ds Max 2020.1 update, which I'm happy to announce has the last missing piece related to performance improvements to the sub-object mode switching in the command panel. We expect that you'll find it sufficiently fast now, but please let us know if we need to keep hammering on it. Until then, we'll be tackling the next most annoying thing 🙂

@brentscannell

I see no difference between 2020 and 2020.1
Looks like "setOptMode 5" is a default behavior now, but no further improvements otherwise. Or am I missing something?

"The commanpanel redraw within editable poly was specifically adressed within 2019.3 and further updated in 2020."

I currently have 2019.3, and the redraw isn't really noticeably sped up, but I can't tell.

@jibijib

Same. In my case 2019.3 offered no improvements, but 2020.1 is definitely faster and more usable when it comes to modeling.

another reason I'd suggest 2020.1  is the hotkey editor.
Infinitely better than the previous offering. Modifier specific VS main UI keys are easy to assign and manage.

Faster UI switching and better hotkey handling definitely sped up my modeling workflow compared to 2019.

Any improvements to this??? Id rather be using maya or blender at this point, its making Max soooo slow. I swear i should just convince our studio to just use blender...

Hi @jrubinoX9C5K

What version of 3ds Max are you using? We did some pretty major changes in this area in 3ds Max 2020.1

2019.   I'm updating to 2019.3 right now.
should I skip this and just move over to 2020 then update?

I would always recommend being at the latest and greatest version as frequently as you can upgrade, so yes I would recommend going to 2020.2

I have been using 2021 and to be honest I had never noticed it, but I'm totally sure this is no longer a problem. Thank you for implementing it!!
