Thanks for your time and interest. I work in the games industry and this request essentially comes down to how many of us approach hard surface modeling these days. I'll start with a loose Dynamesh sketch in ZBrush to dial in proportions and primary shapes, then use Max's Graphite retopo tools to make clean geometry for edge creasing and OpenSubDiv. This will be the final high poly mesh that will eventually get baked once the realtime model is done later in the pipeline. What I typically want to do, since I'm doing retopo on the outer surface of the dynamesh, is extrude my panel thickness INWARD rather than outward. Face extrude and bevel functions alone don't work well because they don't provide an option to cap the area you extruded - that side is left open, which is undesirable. So...Shell modifier to the rescue since it caps both sides and gives you the option to extrude either outward or inward, or both. This is great, however, I often also want to add a taper/flare/bevel (whatever you want to call it) to the extrusion so that I'm not baking 90-degree angles and to add more visual interest to the final result.
My current work around is to make a copy of my flat retopo panel, flip the faces of the copy, bevel the copy, attach it to the original, then weld it all together. It gives the desired results but it's an awfully step-heavy process for something I do a lot of.
So my suggestions for all of this is simply to add a taper function to the shell modifier so that you can extend the panel either inward or outward, then taper the result.

Pls come on beta and push for this! Shell is one of a hell used and useful modifier. Maya doesn't even have it and about and year or so it didn't have a reliable way of adding thickness besides extruding, negative scaling etc(destructive or not).
It has so much potential with a minimal of treatment. Cmon Autodesk!
