Select through (ignore backfacing) improvements

Select through (ignore backfacing) improvements

Currently, ignore backfacing in selections is prone to causing errors, since it is easy to miss whether this setting is on or off. There should be a visual clue in the UI and NOT just a tiny checkbox within the command panel filled with checkboxes and tools. Several co-existing options come to mind:

  1. Displaying objects in X-ray during selection (when the mouse button is pressed), both for object and subobject selection
  2. Put a select through (ignore backfacing) button in the main toolbar, next to the other selection icons. A change of icon/ highlight already indicates the state of the function much clearer.
  3. Highlighting the selection through other objects/ parts of the object in case it is occluded
  4. Giving the (box/lasso) selection window a transparant overlay colour and/or changing the cursor to indicate select through (ignore backfacing) is enabled.

The Blender addon, X-ray selection tools should serve as benchmark for features.

very nice ideas. you just open so many possibilities to improve

there should be HUD message (text) on top of the viewport when its active or not same for soft selection etc. apart from the chnage in the cursor which is a great idea. Cursors in the 3ds max could be more interactive.

Not sure I got the Giving the box/lasso selection window a highlight color idea ? Care to explain ! Sounds interesting ?

I might want to make a compilation of all the viewport overlays, highlights, mouse cursors small ideas improvements and Ill be sure to include this.

Cirno's x-ray selection addon for Blender has most of these options, works really well.

@Intuos5 can you provide some images, gifs or video links to your ideas. I think some of these are in Modo already

4.Giving the (box/lasso) selection window a transparant overlay colour and/or changing the cursor to indicate select through (ignore backfacing) is enabled.

Not sure I get you here.

Also, now this forum supports editing your original post and title of the topic anytime. You seem to have lots of ideas here on forum and might revisiting some of them and updating them with the feedback you received.

With 4. I mean that when you drag a window, you can change its colour when select through is enabled. So instead of being the default white (I think it is), it could be purple-ish or so. The window below is white, but it can be changed in Cirno's x-ray selection addon for Blender.

@Kranos_OrphydianI have plenty of ideas, but I am now moving over to Blender, hopefully for good. Some Beta guys were not able to convince the devs of incorporating Blender UI functionality (incl. modals) so I don't think any of these ideas will come to fruituition. Autodesk is not interested in massively rewriting the core functionality of its software. Max' developers have made great strides in recent years, but I doubt they would radically overhaul the UI/ UX. That'll take years and doesn't look nice on What's new vids. Cinema4D did that recently and seemed to receive quite some flack for it. Shareholders don't like that.
