A checkbox for symmetry would be nice. I would like to guarantee symmetry - even if my base mesh is symmetrical the retopology can still make asymmetrical outputs.
Sure, but then I'm destroying any loops made by the retopo and will most likely get a lot of triangles around the symmetry axis. I want a decent (not perfect) edge flow - especially for making reasonable unwrapping after the fact.
If symmetry is part of how the retopology tool operates it can weigh in symmetry as it voxilizes the mesh (might even speed up things a bit).
I have used this workflow since Retopology beta, But, I never had "a lot of triangles around the symmetry axis" nor edge flow. Even tho Max team makes an auto Symmetry mode, this is what would happen under the hood, But, you would not have fine controls.
Lastly, Retopology doesn't vocalize mesh, and slicing first actually makes the overall calculation a lot faster.
I guess my concern is with the flow of geometry along the slice border - I'm not guaranteed a loop along the mirrored axis as it can sometimes break to make a corner - it matches the underlying geometry better when subdivided but I need the geometry as is. When outputting a lower density mesh (which is what I want) I can get some (technically not) triangles that break flow/silhouette. I also have cases where reotopo breaks the border (vertices not on border axis) that will result in gaps in the mesh when adding symmetry.
Slice and Symmetry are on the exact same position. Workaround is increasing weld threshold of symmetry. Also note the "star" in the resulting geo on the last snippet.
