Project / Folders / Structure

Project / Folders / Structure

Hello

It would be great if 3D's Max would automatically create a tree of folders for every new project.

This idea was firstly introduced  by Logic - a software for composing music (created by Emagic, purchased and further developed by Apple)

Please refer to Logic and see how it works there.

The idea is:  whenever you start a new project (scene) - 3D's Max must automatically create its own standard  folder tree like:

/ Textures

/ materials

/ models

/ settings

/ renderings (export)

e.t.c.

and of course, the main .3ds file inside this project.

(in another words - the project is a .3ds file + collection of folders with all necessary files used)

and whenever user imports any material or model from any other folder on the computer, 3D Max must copy the files to the project's folder.

Thus the project would be complete, always ready for zipping, or transferring to another disk.

if you create new version of the .3ds  within the same project - it will use the same folders/files in them.

From the first glance it might look  like we would need to waste too much of a disk space copying the files. But - it will organise the project great deal. If you somehow change your files on other folders over the time - the project will stay intact, always ready to be opened.

No lost files/ textures/ materials.

With modern SSD rapidly growing - using some extra disk space wouldn't be a problem.

Too often we try to get back to the older work, but we can not open the same scene correctly.

With music projects this idea works so well, that now its hard to imagine it the other way.

Any sound engineer can take the complete project, copy it on flash, carry it to any studio, plug it in and open on any computer instantly.

it would be great to see 3D's Max working the same way

best

Thanks @Anonymous for the idea, this is definitely an area we want to work on.

Hi @Anonymous

The team has made some significant progress towards some of these ideas in 3ds Max 2019 and 2019.1 Update: You can toggle the automatic subfolder creation when creating a new project, as well as access advanced project controls via the new Projects toolbar. We don't see this feature going much further for the time being (with respect to automatic copies of dependencies, for example), and there are already a few ideas that have been marked as improved that provide some details on the first few points. Thank you for your contribution!
