Path Deform for Groups

Path Deform for Groups

Please enable "Path Deform" and "Path Deform (WSM)" modifiers to deform an entire group of objects, such that they stay the same distance with respect to each other, and modifiers are preserved.

Such a feature would save me many hours of time, and allow the modifier stack to stay intact.  Thanks!

awesome idea. Hmm if you would have come with this idea several years ago when the splines got constant updates maybe there was a chance this would happened.

I am surprised it isn't already in place, and suspect there must be something under the hood making it more difficult.  Currently this is what happens.

The original group. The original group.Demonstration of how seperate objects within a group zero out when Path Deform modifier is applied. The same thing happens if the objects were NOT grouped, and simply multiples were selected.Demonstration of how seperate objects within a group zero out when Path Deform modifier is applied. I finally found a workaround for this!  Turns out the PathDeform modifier works properly for groups in Max 2017.  Autodesk changed the way the modifier worked between then and version 2020.

If I open 2017 and use the PathDeform modifier on my group of objects, they follow the spline while keeping their position relative to one another just fine (although there are less options in this older version).

Here's the interesting part.  If, within Max 2017, I save out the file, then open it in Max 2020, the PathDeformed object retains the properties and functionality of the 2017 version modifier.  It's almost as if Autodesk kept the code for it, but hid it from the UI for reasons of backwards compatibility.  (It's under a different name, too: the old was called "PathDeform" and the new is called "Path Deform.")

So as long as I merge that file into my Max 2020 project, I can copy the old PathDeform modifier and paste it onto the new grouped geometry and it works as intended!  It's a little clunky, but not too bad, at least it works.  I don't know whether it is a bug or not...  Because if it's not, then the 2020 PathDeform is a major downgrade from 2017 despite some of the extra bells and whistles.

what happens if you move the pivot?

It appears to make no difference.  I have tried it on object level and group level.  I have also tried checking the "Use Pivot Point" box within the modifier, as well as in the box in the modifier selector dropdown.

Guess the new 2020 Path deform get`s converted to old PathDeform when saved back to <2018.

If you load the scene in 2020 the old Pathdeform is preserved.

I think Boomer Labs did the implementation, so you might ask him on StackThis Facebook Group what`s going on.

And btw, don`t let him know how poor you find his work... 😉

Awesome, thanks so much for implementing this fix! Is this for Max 2020 or just 2021+? I'm still using 2020 but would like to get my hands on this.
