Why not have the option when in Orbit Sub-Object mode, and if no sub-object is selected (say by accident) then default to Orbit Point of Interest? Wouldn't that keep the viewport from zooming out to Saturn?
Autodesk is always reluctant to change these fundamental parts of 3ds max because they argue that there will always be fighting on what the default behavior should be. I argue that a manager where users can change and tailor what point to orbit under different situations is the ideal solution. It means the default behavior when you install max is just like before, but you have the freedom to customize yourself if needed.
