Currently there are, AFAIK, 2 options to display geometry as unintrusive on the viewport without having to create a special material: "Display as a box" and by changing visibility or checking see-through.
See though is still obtrusive most of the times for big objects.
And "display as a box" can become huge if the object is big, to the point that it's hard to know where the object is actually located.
It would be nice to have more display modes for geometry, similar to what Itoo's Forest pack has: Thin box, arrow, point cloud, and so forth, without having to convert the object to a proxy.
