Max Needs Many PBR Material Libraries

Max Needs Many PBR Material Libraries

Slate is a very powerful tool to create materials. But one thing lacking is a prebuilt collection of material libraries to get new users up and running without having to build all their own libraries from scratch. Some ideas of materials (using the Physical Material) that I'd like to see:

  • Bricks
  • Stones
  • Concrete and Pavement
  • Wood (both tree barks as well as cut wood finishes)
  • Plants (leaves of many species)
  • Animal Skins (Human races, fish/reptile scales, amphibians, etc.)
  • Metals
  • Glass / Crystals
  • Liquids (expand current liquid library that comes with Max)

These libraries should be parametric using OSL.

I know that the physical material comes with many presets but it is limited; also, many users do better by being able to see the material they want to use (which is easier by viewing material libraries.

Max does come with a few material libraries, but they are very poor or limited. Even worse, most users do not know they exist--because when you click Open Material Library, it defaults to the Project Material Library. The open material library should also show the <MAXROOT>/materiallibraries files when you are opening a library (or else have a shortcut to those).

I agree. PBR is the way of the future (and the NOW to be honest) and having a library that new users can build off of would get everyone up to speed quicker. If you can take a PBR material, save it as something else and then tweak it to your needs that would be amazing! Thank you for the suggestion

Status changed to: Under Review

The team is looking at this right now, and I'm filing this as Under Review accordingly. Keep an eye out to this thread, I'll post back as soon as I have more news.

There are many existing libraries of PBR materials online.
i.e. https://freepbr.com/

I have made it a habit to create my own library on my machine, consisting of PBR and Substance materials that I have found to be the most useful over a period of time and re-use them frequently.

A nice tool that can help someone browse these libraries within 3dsmax is the official Asset Browser plugin

Now that we have the procedural wood material, I could see the materials listed as other procedural materials. Unless Substance Designer is what's holding this off.

maybe some luck with the new SME
