I find it very helpful to lay out complex material trees in an easy to understand manner, group them according to function, set apart maps that change the basic look the most, show big previews for some maps and collapse others etc., not only when I want to share the file with other artists, but also for when I revisit it myself after a while.
Layout Children etc. is not sufficient for this.
An even more basic form of this would be distributing different groups of materials to dedicated view tabs.
Arranging material trees in such a way can take quite some time and effort, but currently there seems to be no way to transfer such a layout between different max files. The best we can do is to resave the same file under a different name, or merge additional content into this file, but I'm not aware of a way to merge the material tree layout or whole view tabs into other files.
